THE ARTIST | SYDNEY
Bridging the gap between building and Nature. The name.....The Artist!
Equnox design proposal for the extension of the AGNSW competition. The challenge was to create an addition to the existing Art Gallery of New South Wales by allocating new halls and exhibition areas to grow the current art display. Our proposal relies on continuing the landscape from The Domain park sitting on top of the car park extending over 40,000sqm. The curved waving ceiling was designed by introducing a fictional topography to the flat structure, simulating the Domain’s irregular scenery. Connecting the street level of Sir John Crescent as well as becoming a pedestrian bridge to access the park above.
A sport and event courtyard is brought down form the top of the current carpark to ground level, connecting the street view to the new gallery. The interior is divided in 3 sections:
1. On the north wing remains a third of the existing carpark with low ceilings held by structural grid like columns. The columns are used as a space for art displays to maximise usable space.
2. In the middle an open foyer welcomes visitors with a cafe, seating spaces and public facilities. We integrate the botanical gardens inside the new addition though green walls and inside green spaces.
3. While on the south wing we design the green walk resembling a Botanical
Garden. Each gallery space has a square shape intertwining each other by
series of ramps and stairs connecting everything together making the art
gallery not only a space for display but a journey.
